General Information about the practice

  • We have 2 full time administrative team members, Linda and Maria,
    responsible for appointments & general enquiries
  • Part time Sister Marizelle assists with minor procedures, motivations and specific enquiries
  • Blood test or other results will be sent to you if there are no abnormalities. Any others results will be handled by Dr van Wijk either telephonically, by email, or if need be, an appointment will be arranged
  • Information can be requested through email. Although all care will be taken to respond as soon as possible, please expect a response time of 7-10 business days
  • Special requests for insurance and other claims will be handled on an
    individual basis

First Consultation

  • One business day prior to your appointment, you will receive sms reminder to confirm the appointment
  • Please cancel your appointment 24 hours in advance if you are unable to attend, to avoid a cancellation fee, and as this can give us the opportunity to attend to another patient in need of an appointment
  • Please arrive 15mins prior to your appointment for administrative tasks
  • An admin fee of R200 will be charged
  • Some medical funders require an authorization number and or referral letter from your general practitioner
  • Please bring your ID, medical aid card and past medical history available to your visit
  • Please do not empty your bladder prior to your appointment
  • In case of chronic bladder problems please complete a voiding diary (example available on the website)
  • If you require a procedure to be done in the rooms (Vasectomy, Cystoscopy, Urethral Dilatation etc) please obtain an authorization number from your medical funder prior to the procedure

Before Your Procedure

  • Please confirm your admission time and auth number prior to your procedure date
  • Please carefully read through the consent for your procedure and please deliver a signed copy to the rooms for Linda’s attention before making your way to the ward
  • Admission time is usually approximately 2 hours prior to your allocated theatre time, please keep in mind that theatre time might change on short notice
  • Please do not take insulin injections while fasting
  • Please discuss your anti coagulant treatment with Dr van Wijk during your visit as there is a requirement to stop this medication prior to the procedure. Depending on which type of anti coagulant medication you are on Dr van Wijk will advise on when to stop this treatment
  • Please take your chronic medication on the morning prior to the procedure. If unsure, please discuss with Dr van Wijk
  • Please refrain from eating and or drinking 6 hours prior to your procedure time
  • For any queries regarding anaesthetics please contact Versage and Partners
  • Have a normal bowel movement the day of the procedure or the day before

Post Operative Care

  • Discharge post procedure will be discussed in hospital
  • Special care is taken to allow discharge before 12:00 on the day of discharge
  • Medication prescribed by Dr van Wijk post procedure to take home can be collected from the pharmacy after you have been discharged from the ward
  • Dressings should stay on for 4-5 days
  • Shower is allowed
  • Take care of bowel habits according to your usual routine
  • Please ensure that you have a follow up appointment according to your information (usually 2-6 weeks post procedure)
  • Activities and driving according to specific procedure
  • Sutures will dissolve within a period of 2-4 weeks
  • Experiencing occasional bleeding after surgery is considered normal. At times the bleeding might be more significant as a subcutaneous hematoma drains
  • Spotting might occur up to 6 weeks post operative
